    COMPLEMENTARY USE OF DESIGN METHODOLOGIES IN EDUCATIONAL ENGINEERING DESIGN PROJECTS: A CASE STUDY

    The challenge of a nowadays well-grounded engineering education is preparing industry ready graduates, that is, to provide students with the skills to master the complexity of products in terms of innovation, invention and problem solving combined with soft skills abilities. This addresses particularly the engineering design education, which in general should be mainly based on practical studies represented by engineering design projects. In order to supply industry with work-ready practitioners, the effectiveness and efficacy of design education respectively design projects is a crucial aspect. This article presents some findings of an efficient use of design methodologies and techniques when carrying through design projects in the faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics at the University of Applied Sciences, Deggendorf, Germany. Engineering design projects are compulsory for students within their curriculum. The projects aim at fostering and stimulating students creativity by means of a complementary use of design methodologies and techniques. By taking advantage of this approach the systematic generation of ideas in the course of a design project is presented, which eventually led to the development of an innovative product

    Bond Behavior of WAAM Reinforcements in Comparison to Conventional Steel Reinforcements

    Additive manufacturing is becoming increasingly important in the construction industry. Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) can be integrated into the selective paste intrusion (SPI) to enable the simultaneous printing of reinforced concrete. The bond behavior of a WAAM reinforcement was investigated with pull-out tests and compared to alternative reinforcement types to analyze the stress transfer between the different components. In the first step, the surface of all the reinforcement types was recorded using a laser-based line scan measuring system. This permits the evaluation of the surface parameters, such as the surface roughness Rq, or the related rib area fR. The WAAM reinforcement showed a bond behavior in the pull-out tests that was comparable to a reinforcing steel bar. Both the bond stresses achieved, and the occurring scatter of the measurement results at the characteristic slip values were almost the same. Even without existing transverse ribs, the WAAM reinforcement reached maximum bond stresses similar to the reinforcing steel. An evaluation of the surface roughness revealed a linear relationship with the maximum bond stress achieved with a logarithmic scaling of Rq.     Mitofusin 2 is required to maintain mitochondrial coenzyme Q levels

    Mitochondria form a dynamic network within the cell as a result of balanced fusion and fission. Despite the established role of mitofusins (MFN1 and MFN2) in mitochondrial fusion, only MFN2 has been associated with metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases, which suggests that MFN2 is needed to maintain mitochondrial energy metabolism. The molecular basis for the mitochondrial dysfunction encountered in the absence of MFN2 is not understood. Here we show that loss of MFN2 leads to impaired mitochondrial respiration and reduced ATP production, and that this defective oxidative phosphorylation process unexpectedly originates from a depletion of the mitochondrial coenzyme Q pool. Our study unravels an unexpected and novel role for MFN2 in maintenance of the terpenoid biosynthesis pathway, which is necessary for mitochondrial coenzyme Q biosynthesis. The reduced respiratory chain function in cells lacking MFN2 can be partially rescued by coenzyme Q10 supplementation, which suggests a possible therapeutic strategy for patients with diseases caused by mutations in the Mfn2 gene
